Contractors use several terms when searching for an attachment that can work at different angles. These include excavator swivel bucket, power tilt bucket, and excavator tiltrotator.
Although the terms may appear similar, the products can provide different types of movement.
Some solutions add tilt to one bucket. Others add tilt at the coupler connection. A complete tiltrotator combines bidirectional tilt, continuous rotation, proportional control, and an attachment interface in one system.
Selecting the right solution depends on the work the excavator performs and how often the operator needs to change attachments or working directions.
What Is an Excavator Swivel Bucket?
The term excavator swivel bucket is not always used consistently. Depending on the market or supplier, it may describe a bucket that tilts sideways, rotates, or uses an integrated articulation mechanism.
The main advantage is additional bucket movement compared with a fixed attachment.
A swivel bucket can help the operator follow slopes, clean drainage channels, work beside structures, or adjust the cutting edge without immediately moving the excavator.
However, if the movement mechanism is built into the bucket, it remains available only when that specific bucket is connected.
Changing to another attachment normally removes the swivel function.
How a Power Tilt Bucket Is Different
A power tilt bucket normally uses hydraulic cylinders or another powered mechanism to tilt the bucket laterally.
It can be an effective tool for:
- Grading slopes
- Cleaning ditches
- Shaping drainage channels
- Finishing road edges
- Levelling uneven ground
- Landscaping work
For an excavator dedicated mainly to grading, this may provide the required movement without installing a complete tiltrotator.
The limitation is working direction. A power tilt bucket can change the lateral cutting angle, but it may not provide continuous rotation.
If the bucket must face another direction, the operator may still need to reposition the excavator or rotate the upper structure.

What an Excavator Tiltrotator Adds
An excavator tiltrotator is installed between the excavator arm and the work tool. It provides continuous 360-degree rotation together with bidirectional tilt.
This allows the operator to adjust both the angle and direction of the attachment.
For example, the bucket can be rotated to work parallel to a wall, across the front of the excavator, along a trench, or around an underground service. The operator can then tilt the cutting edge to match the required surface.
These movements can reduce the need to move the complete excavator every time the working angle changes.

A major advantage of an excavator tiltrotator is that its movement is not limited to one bucket.
Compatible digging buckets, grading buckets, grapples, compactors, and other work tools installed below the tiltrotator can use the same positioning functions.
This can improve efficiency on projects where the machine performs several tasks.
The excavator may begin by digging a trench, change to a grading bucket for surface finishing, and then use another compatible attachment for material handling or compaction. The tilt-and-rotation capability remains available throughout the workflow.
Actual attachment compatibility depends on the lower coupler, hydraulic circuits, tool weight, dimensions, and operating requirements.
Reducing Interruptions on the Jobsite
Efficiency is often lost during the small interruptions between working cycles.
The operator may need to stop, move the tracks, change the machine angle, check clearance, and restart the task. These interruptions become significant when repeated throughout the working day.
An excavator swivel bucket can reduce some repositioning during bucket work. A power tilt bucket provides useful lateral control. A tiltrotator extends this flexibility by adding continuous rotation and making the movement available to multiple compatible attachments.

A dedicated swivel or power tilt bucket may be suitable when the excavator performs one main task and rarely changes work tools.
A tiltrotator is more suitable when:

- The machine operates in restricted areas

- Accurate material placement is important
- Repositioning interrupts the workflow
- The excavator performs both digging and finishing work
